1963 Mercedes 300 SE 'Fintail' (W112) under restoration

Registration: DYG 955 B

Chassis Number: 112-014-22-003916

Engine Number: 189 984 22 003365

Number of cylinders: 6 CC: 2996

Year of Manufacture: 1963

The new generation of fintail models was introduced in 1959. First came the 220/220S/200SE W111 sedans, these were joined in 1961 by the 220SE W111 coupe and convertible, as well as the four-cylinder W110 190 and 190D.

A replacement for the big W189 Type 300 Adenauer limousine was still being developed. Rather than developing a new platform, the six-cylinder 3-litre engine from the 300SL Gullwing was installed in the W111 to create a luxury W112 with improved features and detailing. Although the two looked similar, reception of the W112 was positive.

The car features an all-aluminium 3-litre, 6-in-line engine, 4 speed automatic gearbox, air suspension with variable ride control, all-round disc brakes, power steering and central locking. The cabin was luxuriously finished with expensive wood, leather, and plush carpets.

Despite its, not inconsiderable weight, the 300SE was endowed with highly respectable performance, reaching 60mph in a little over 10 seconds and exceeding 125mph flat out.

Only 5,202 examples were made, of which approx. 1,190 were right hand drive saloons.

We are pleased to offer this original UK right-hand drive 300SE Short Wheel Base Limousine finished in DB158 Grey white (Grauweiss) with a red leather interior and original Mercedes ‘Webasto’ sunroof that can only be described as a full restoration project.

It still retains its original registration number DYG 955 B and log book. It appears to have been taken off the road a very long time ago, the last tax disc that was in the car was expires in 1983 and an insurance note attached to the V5 states 1982. The car was stored in a barn until it was discovered by us and brought back to our workshop in 2016.

Any restoration would allow the original colour of DB158 Grey white (Grauweiss)  to be reinstated or perhaps changed to MB387 metallic blue, which was a period option on the W112. This together with a change from red to tan leather interior would make a striking combination. The engine, which has matching numbers, ran briefly when we tried to get it started but soon ran out of steam and we haven’t tried since.  As far as we can see, it is a complete car and a worthwhile cause, as W112 fintail continue to rise steadily in value.

A full restoration quote can be provided on request.
